Who are you and what business did you start?
I’m Martha Lewis and I founded the Complete Sleep Solution. I find the root cause of my clients’ insomnia and help them sleep better naturally.
What’s your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?
I became passionate about sleep after my own sleep struggles. I tried every supplement under the sun and followed all the “sleep rules” and nothing worked. I’d been working in the health and wellness field for a decade as a nutritionist and so luckily I learned about functional lab testing. I took the tests and found out that I had a parasite, hormone imbalance and food sensitivities that were causing my sleep issues. I became a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner so I could run lab tests for my clients and uncover the cause of their insomnia, too.
Since the mind also plays a role in sleep problems, I help my clients with their thoughts about sleep, sleep anxiety and stress in general. You have to address both the body and the mind to sleep better long-term.
Describe the process of launching the business.
I had already started a business as a pediatric sleep consultant because of my son’s sleep issues when he was a baby. So it was a natural transition to helping adults with sleep, too.
I live in a small town in Wyoming so I knew I had to have online business to get clients. I struggled until I hired a business coach who helped me with marketing strategy as well as mindset. Since then, I’ve been growing consistently while working only 25-30 hours a week.
Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?
I give a lot of value to attract clients. I write a monthly article in my local newspaper, I have a FB group with 1500 members where I share helpful and inspiring information about sleep, I send out weekly emails, and I just started a podcast.
How are you doing today and what does the future look like?
I’ve made over 6 figures so far this year and I’m in a mastermind where I’m working on scaling my business over the next few years. I’m planning on launching a group program in the future so I can help more people get the sleep the need.
Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?
I’ve learned that it’s ok to ask for help and to hire a coach. I knew nothing about business so why did I think I could do it on my own?
I’ve also learned that mindset is everything. You can take all the action in the world but your results are completely different if you’re doubting yourself vs. if you’re confident and passionate about helping others.
I also recommend hiring help before you think you’re ready. I have a VA and a bookkeeper who save me hours a week that I can spend giving more value to my audience and my clients.
What platform/tools do you use for your business?
I focus on FB for my social media platform. I use Mailchimp for email marketing. My VA uses Canva for designing social media post. And I use 17Hats and Google Drive for client and lead information.
What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?
So many! My business coach’s programs and her podcast Online Business Building Mamas are amazing. For books I’ve loved The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod, the You Are A Badass series as well as women entrepreneur stories like Shark Tales and Believe IT.
Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?
Get help from the beginning, work on your mindset, and don’t give up!
