Who are you and what business did you start?
My name is Evannah Jayne, my company is Terran Industries. We provide B2B facilitation of customized sustainable solutions. Providing businesses with the latest in eco-friendly products and services, allowing them to accelerate their transition towards a sustainable, net zero future.
What’s your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?
Growing up in Melbourne’s leafy green suburbs has given me a passion for nature and the environment. Now, living sustainably, both locally & globally has become an urgent project. After years in the second-hand industry, I turned academic in the lockdown of 2020. Some of my certificates from online courses include; “Managing The Company Of The Future” – University of London. “The Sustainable Development Goals” – University of Copenhagen, and “Nature-based Solutions for Disaster and Climate Resilience” – UN Environment Programme & The SDG Academy. These have enabled me to clearly see my vision for the future, which comes with the growth of Terran Industries.
The formation of the company came to me over several months. After seeing the gaps in the sustainability industries from my time in the second hand area, and research of similar enterprises and business models, I saw the gap in the market that I could easily fill.
Describe the process of launching the business.
Research and mentoring. I knew I couldn’t do it alone. My first step was to find a passionate team of people with a wide range of skillsets. I spent several months searching for companies in the industry that we could use as our suppliers, at the moment we have close to 100, and our list grows every day. With the help of mentors and business advisors we have taken this business one step at a time, always planning before we jump into anything.
Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?
As a start up, we’re still refining our processes, however all our leads so far have come from referrals though contractors or network connections.
How are you doing today and what does the future look like?
It’s early days, but we’re rising fast. With the rise of the eco conscious consumer, more and more businesses are seeking to make the switch to sustainable products and services, in order to attract and keep the new generation of customers. Our services allow our clients to do this with ease.
Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?
To always be ready to expect the unexpected. Starting the business during lockdown forced us to think outside the box, and if you can’t adapt to change, you’re likely going to fail.
What platform/tools do you use for your business?
For our back office platforms, we’re set up on Google Business Suite, and use connecting software including Slack, Evernote, Active Campaign, Contentful, Zoom & Xero. We have also recently signed up with a new AI platform called My Digital Brain, that helps us generate original marketing content. We have socials accounts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.
What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?
My go-to authors are Emma Isaacs, Richard Spector & Matthew Pollard. All of whom have an amazing series of books.
Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to jump in. Business isn’t easy, but if you love what you’re doing, you’ll find a way to succeed.
