If you are planning to become a medical assistant in 2026, you’ve made an excellent choice. Now, the important thing to pay attention to is certification, as a credential will validate your skills and, honestly, reduce the headache of employers.
But what certification should you aim for? On one hand, you have CCMA, which is primarily for individuals who want to aim for the clinical aspect of the MA role. Whereas, if you want to aim for a virtual role or administrative aspect, then you need to focus on the CMAA.
While this is the fundamental difference between these two, there is more to it than this. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is a CMAA? (The Administrative Expert)
The CMAA or Certified Medical Administrative Assistant is a credential offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). As mentioned above, this certification is designed for individuals who want to work as the administrative expert of the medical office.
By obtaining this certification, you are telling the employer that you are skilled and validated for the following duties:
- Patient Triage and Scheduling: Managing complex calendars for multiple physicians.
- Medical Billing and Coding: Ensuring the correct codes are used so the office gets paid by insurance companies.
- HIPAA Compliance: Safeguarding patient privacy and managing sensitive Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Office Management: Handling the day-to-day logistics that keep a clinic running.
What is a CCMA? (The Clinical Specialist)
By now, you can already guess that this credential is all about the clinical aspect. Interestingly, the CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) is also offered by the NHA, but it is a broader certification.
This means that while the main focus is on the clinical side, you will also need to know some administrative duties as well.
Typical expected duties of a certified CCMA include:
- Phlebotomy: Drawing blood for lab tests.
- EKGs: Monitoring heart rhythms.
- Clinical Procedures: Assisting with minor surgeries, such as suturing or biopsies.
- Patient Intake: Measuring vitals (blood pressure, temperature, height/weight) and recording medical histories.
- Injections: Administering vaccinations and medications under the doctor’s supervision.
Which Personality Type Fits Each Role?
In addition to learning about the differences between the two certifications, it is also important to understand how you will fit in a medical setting based on your personality.
This self/personality audit also becomes important when you consider that many medical assistant certification online schools offer paths to both credentials; you should audit your own preferences before enrolling.
You should choose CMAA if:
- You enjoy organization and puzzles (like figuring out insurance claims).
- You prefer a professional office environment over a sterile clinical one.
- You are uncomfortable with needles, blood, or physical patient contact.
- You have strong communication skills and enjoy being the “concierge” of a medical practice.
You should choose CCMA if:
- You are fascinated by the human body and how it works.
- You enjoy “hands-on” work and aren’t squeamish.
- You want to be involved in the actual treatment and recovery of patients.
- You eventually want to go to nursing school or become a Physician Assistant (PA).
The Training Process: What to Expect
No matter if you choose a medical assistant course online or offline, the chances are that you will not find a huge difference between the two. This is because a majority of high-quality training providers like the CCI Training Center will provide a comprehensive program that covers both clinical and administrative aspects. Still, you can expect the following from your training:
You will spend time learning about medical law, ethics, and the software used for scheduling and billing.
You will be required to complete an in-person clinical externship.
You will learn soft skills that are essential to calm a patient or deal with a frustrated (sick) patient.
