CMAA or CCMA: Which One is Right For You?

But what certification should you aim for? On one hand, you have CCMA, which is primarily for individuals who want to aim for the clinical aspect of the MA role. Whereas, if you want to aim for a virtual role or administrative aspect, then you need to focus on the CMAA.

What is a CMAA? (The Administrative Expert)

The CMAA or Certified Medical Administrative Assistant is a credential offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). As mentioned above, this certification is designed for individuals who want to work as the administrative expert of the medical office.

By obtaining this certification, you are telling the employer that you are skilled and validated for the following duties:

• Patient Triage and Scheduling: Managing complex calendars for multiple physicians.
• Medical Billing and Coding: Ensuring the correct codes are used so the office gets paid by insurance companies.
• HIPAA Compliance: Safeguarding patient privacy and managing sensitive Electronic Health Records (EHR).
• Office Management: Handling the day-to-day logistics that keep a clinic running.

What is a CCMA? (The Clinical Specialist)

By now, you can already guess that this credential is all about the clinical aspect. Interestingly, the CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) is also offered by the NHA, but it is a broader certification. 

This means that while the main focus is on the clinical side, you will also need to know some administrative duties as well. 

Typical expected duties of a certified CCMA include:

• Phlebotomy: Drawing blood for lab tests.
• EKGs: Monitoring heart rhythms.
• Clinical Procedures: Assisting with minor surgeries, such as suturing or biopsies.
• Patient Intake: Measuring vitals (blood pressure, temperature, height/weight) and recording medical histories.
• Injections: Administering vaccinations and medications under the doctor’s supervision.

The Training Process: What to Expect
