What’s your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

Kate Langford, CEO/Founder of Kate Langford Career Consulting has grown a team from herself in 2018 to 15 now in 2021 working with clients Australia wide and NZ based on the Sunshine Coast. Her team assists people to identify their dream role, using a holistic approach as well as Resume Writing, Job Searching strategies, Career/Confidence/Interview Coaching, and have many programs/memberships/packages that help hundreds of people every week.

KLCC transforms the lives of people through our honest and authentic approach and have won awards in both service and business that supports this. Being a Mother to three children under six, a million-dollar business that has scaled through covid (as well as having my third baby) in three short years, has been a huge achievement, all while helping change the lives of people across the country. Her mantra is “Do the job you love, not the one you can do.
KLCC was born to help people to land their ideal career, even in a tough job market. We help people to land a job they LOVE not just what they can do! I am very much an honest, passionate, and resilient female entrepreneur who is on a mission to help people to gain confidence in themselves through landing a job they love. I want to go worldwide and won’t stop until I do!

Describe the process of launching the business.

How I started KLCC is very special. I was working for a recruitment firm and knew I had more to give. I wanted to help people and that helping the employer for 16 years was great, but it wasn’t fulfilling my

purpose. I knew that teaching people what I’d learned over the years and teaching them the backdoor on how to find a job that they’re passionate about and how to get it and land it from being on the other side of the fence, was really where my heart lied.

I knew I wanted to start a Career Coaching business but having a 2- and 3-year-old in tow made it very hard to leave. My Dad called me and said, “Kate, what’s it going to take for you to leave this job and start your own business?” I said, “Dad, I need at least $500 a week to be able to cover the costs because I have a young family.” He said, “Right, I’m going to lend you that money until you can pay me back.” I still remember this phone call vividly, walking out the back crying, saying I can’t believe that this is going to come to light. He knew I had to give it a go because this was bigger than me. That was in April 2018.

Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?

We have an honest, no fluff, and authentic approach and we say this at the start of EVERY consult in our business. This is critical to our success, because this is our point of difference and have so much feedback, saying exactly that. Our turnaround times with responding to emails, phone calls, facebook messages is also a point of difference, as most people always comment on our efficiency.

Because we get back to people quickly and efficiently, we gain trust and “care factor” from our clients, which is also followed through with the service and the entire customer journey. The testimonials on our page, google etc, all attest to this also, with the common denominator being “KLCC go above and beyond”. We are known for this, and not afraid to be honest and open about what their struggles might be.

Clients either laugh or cry in our sessions because it is lifechanging. KLCC can see what they may not have seen in themselves, hold the mirror and challenge where required. This is where the “unlocking” comes in and they can finally see that they can have a fore filling career and so much more. We don’t have a “cookie cutter” process like most, but explore the PERSON including experiences, identifying their life’s purpose and fulfillment. We work with people holistically and explore their personal life to ensure passions are aligned to be able to create the ideal role and industry that is suited to them.

How are you doing today and what does the future look like?

My greatest achievements and goals have always been to change lives, the lives of her clients, other Mums and Women who haven’t been able to realise their potential through coaching and development, while constantly working to be a desirable employer and create opportunities for people to learn from what I do, while working around their family. I also went from 6 staff to 15 in a matter of 2 months during covid. This was extremely tough but needed to happen so we can help as many people as possible. Another great achievement is our growth of over 300% and now a million-dollar business and outgrown 2 offices in the last 12 months. We are rapidly growing and been sourced for interviews, collaborations with Universities and TAFES and really making an impact.

I was also awarded Best Personal Service Silver in the ROAR Awards in 2020 (want to win this year haha) as well as silver for Business Excellence in AusMumpreneur awards and currently a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Businesswomen Network Corporate Businesswoman of the year out of 200 people (1 of 9)I have a large pipeline of big businesses that want to collaborate with us including TAFE Queensland, speaking events, interviews and media which are all really exciting!

Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?

I also wish I knew before I started business that you would be doing some very late nights, or when someone was sick you had to step in or when you had a bad day, remember, there is always tomorrow. Just because you have a bad week or month in sales doesn’t mean you stop, there are ebbs and flows. The growth of the business hasn’t been easy, as any entrepreneur knows, sometimes you go forward on one side, while you take a few steps back on the other. Changes with online marketing rules and other challenges never slowed me down though. I have often been on my own, without support of others, while still juggling my busy family and had to push on through. If anything, it would be BACKING MYSELF in the early days, I got there, and fast, but really backing yourself from DAY 1 would have been the only thing done differently

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

Grace Lever was my mentor who said to me:

Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?

I know many people say that they don’t regret anything, but for me, I really wouldn’t. It has taught me so much including resilience. You need to be prepared for the hard work, late nights, and determination to MAKE IT HAPPEN. You need to be able to see the vision and not let anything stop you.
