About Evangelos Marinakis

Born 30 July 1967 in the Greek port city of Piraeus, Evangelos Marinakis is the only son of Miltiadis Marinakis, the Crete-born shipowner, Vanimar founder and member of Greek Parliament. His mother, Irini Marinaki, is descended from the prestigious Ypsilantis family.

Like his father before him, Vangelis Marinakis has made a considerable contribution to the global maritime industry. He also followed his father into politics. Partnering with Yannis Moralis, vice president of Olympiacos Football Club, Evangelos Marinakis co-founded the ‘Piraeus Winner’ alliance, becoming a member of Piraeus City Council following the party’s successful election campaign in 2014. During his tenure, Evangelos Marinakis consistently focused on upgrading infrastructure, spearheading and executing ambitious plans designed to transform his home city into a thriving tourist destination, in the process boosting living standards for local people.

Evangelos Marinakis studied at the American International University in London, earning a bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration as well as a master’s degree in International Relations. Upon graduation, he ventured into shipping, working as a chartered broker for two prestigious UK-based companies, Harley Mullion and Elders Chartering Limited. Evangelos Marinakis also worked for Capital Ship Management Corporation for 13 years, joining the company as a commercial manager.

True to his entrepreneurial and maritime heritage, it was not long before Evangelos Marinakis founded his own company, the Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation. He also served as CEO of the New York Stock Exchange-listed Crude Carriers Corporation, overseeing the company’s successful merger with Capital Product Partners LP, a company he continues to preside over as chairman today.

In addition to his pioneering role in the global maritime industry and serving as a member of Piraeus City Council, Evangelos Marinakis is also a prominent figure in the world of football having acquired a controlling share in both Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest FC. Working with the latter club, Mr Marinakis managed to secure the approval of the English Football League for his bold plans to restore the team to its previous glory, including an exciting redevelopment scheme reimagining the team’s historic ground, culminating in the creation of a worldclass stadium – the largest in the East Midlands.

A committed philanthropist, Evangelos Marinakis is the proud supporter of various charities and non-profits created to drive positive environmental and social change. Under his leadership, the Capital Marime & Trading Corporation has been recognised with several prestigious awards for its environmental sustainability efforts, including the Port of Long Beach, Southern Carolina’s Green Environmental Achievement Award and the GREEN4SEA Excellence Award 2015.

Throughout his career, Evangelos Marinakis has leveraged his position as a public figure to promote a host of worthy causes. As owner of Olympiacos FC, he brokered a partnership between the Club and UNICEF, providing the charity with vital funding for a child immunisation programme rolled out across developing nations. As a member of Piraeus City Council, Mr Marinakis used his personal wealth to drive job creation and redevelopment across the city. In the wake of the Greek financial crisis, he gifted €168,590 to Greek Debt Free on behalf of Olympiacos FC, providing the charity website with a vital injection of collateral. In 2014, Evangelos Marinakis gifted €500,000 to finance a school rebuilding scheme in Cephalonia following devastating earthquakes across the Greek island.

Evangelos Marinakis is best known as leader of Capital Maritime Group, a company that manages a fleet of over 70 vessels, including dry bulk carriers, ships and tankers. He also serves on the board of several other market-leading organisations, including Alter Ego Media SA, One Channel and Abisso Holdings, as well as retaining a major shareholding in Capital Product Partners LP.
