Dr. Dain Heer: Why Being You Matters More Than Ever

You can do all the personal work in the world and still feel like a stranger managing your own life. Dr. Dain Heer has spent three decades arguing the missing piece was never another method. It was you.

By the time most people find Dr. Dain Heer, they have already tried everything else. Therapy. A stack of books. A meditation app they open twice a week and feel guilty about the other five days. A course that worked for exactly six weeks. Somewhere in there, a lot of people quietly conclude that they must be the common denominator; that the problem must be them.

Dain’s response, built from more than three decades of working with people who feel this way, is that the diagnosis has it backward. What if there is NOTHING wrong with you? You’ve basically spent years managing a version of yourself built to fit in, please people and stay inside what looks normal – and you’re mistaking that person for you.

But if if you is something completely different, something so right and wondrous that you haven’t even begun to consider that as a possibility.

Dain calls it “autopilot checkout” in his book Being You, Changing the World. The auto-pilot is efficient. It gets you through the day. It’s also, he argues, the reason someone can check every box on a good life and still feel like they’re watching it from somewhere else, wondering what they’re missing.

And the AI-era seems to deepen this habit of sleepwalking through life. A study out of Duke and USC found that AI is steadily standardising how people write. Even the uniqueness of their ideas disappear once a chatbot has smoothed the text out. But Heer would argue the bigger pressure was already there long before anyone opened ChatGPT: a lifetime of being told, by parents, employers, culture, algorithms now, what a good version of you is supposed to look like. AI just got faster at handing you the average.

So what would actually change if you stop running your life on autopilot?

The way Heer sees it, choosing to truly be you and create your life is like unplugging from the matrix. You will know what to choose faster since there is no autopilot polling everyone else’s opinion before trusting your own. Relationships are no longer a performance of who the autopilot thinks you’re supposed to be for the other person, but an exploration of who you can be together. Money stops being something you manage from the programs of fear and starts being something you can actually get excited to create. And the body, which absorbs so much of what the mind refuses to deal with, can finally start to let go of that luggage, and take a breath!

One exercise from the book is simple enough to try before even finishing this article!

1. Write down the five things that you actually out your time, energy and attention on over the last seven days. (Not the five you’d claim if someone asked!)

2. Then write the five you’d choose if you were starting from nothing.

Heer calls the gap between those two lists your real priorities versus the official ones. Most people, he writes, never look at the difference and that is part of what keeps the autopilot in place. Acknowledging the gap and realizing that you can and always could make a different choice – grab the steering wheel of your life! – is the first step to being you and creating the life you desire.

That’s the case he’s making in person this November, at a three-day class in Rome called Being You, Changing the World, with an online option for anyone who can’t travel. There’s no prerequisite, and no requirement that you already know what “being you” means going in. Just the willingness to find out.
